Saliva variations in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

2007

Abstract Objectives The protective role of saliva in the case of oesophageal exposition to gastric acid has long been studied but some contradictions still remain. The main end-point of this study was to evaluate if a qualitative and quantitative alteration in salivary secretion exists in patients affected by GERD. Methods One hundred and twenty patients (T group) with clinically and endoscopically diagnosed GERD, and 98 healthy subjects (C group) have been evaluated; salivary tests (i.e. basal flow rate, stimulated flow rate, pH, [Na + ] and [K + ]) were performed, socio-demographical variables and oral GERD-related symptoms were taken into account. SPSS 10.5 software was used for statisti…

The effects of alpha-cypermethrin exposure on biochemical and redox parameters in pregnant rats and their newborns

2016

IF 2.388; International audience; Pyrethroid insecticides are extensively used in agriculture and in household activities. During pregnancy, they might affect maternal metabolic status and there after fetal development. In this work, we studied metabolic and redox effects of low dose alpha-cypermethrin exposure in pregnant rats and their offspring. The diet containing alpha cypermethrin at 0.02 mg/kg/day was consumed during the entire gestation. Plasma biochemical parameters as well as liver lipid and oxidative stress markers were determined. Our results showed that alpha-cypermethrin induced an increase in body weight and in plasma glucose and lipid levels, as well as in plasma aspartate a…

Protective role of heat shock proteins in Parkinson's disease.

2010

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease. Despite a large amount of research, the pathogenetic mechanism of these diseases has not yet been clarified. Abnormal protein folding, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and apoptotic mechanisms have all been reported as causes of neurodegenerative diseases in association with neuroinflammatory mechanisms which, by generating deleterious molecules, could promote the cascade of events leading to neurodegeneration. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) play a central role in preventing protein misfolding and inhibiting apoptotic activity, and represent a class of proteins potentially involve…
